Im Jahr 1940 reist der US-amerikanische Journalist Varian Fry (Cory Michael Smith) im Auftrag des
Emergency Rescue Committe und mit 3000 Dollar in der Tasche nach Marseille. Ebenfalls im Gepäck hat er
eine Liste mit Künstler:innen und Autor:innen, die vor dem NS-Regime flüchten und von einer Auslieferung an
die Nazis bedroht sind. Fry und sein Team fälschen Dokumente, treiben Hilfsgelder auf und organisieren die
sichere Ausreise der Flüchtigen.
Unterstützt wird Varian von der Amerikanerin Mary Jaye Gold (Gillian Jacobs). Sie ist eine junge Frau aus
reichem Hause, die ihr Vermögen dazu nutzt, um die Flucht der intellektuellen Gegner:innen des NS-Regimes
zu finanzieren. Als ihr Vater ihr jedoch die Geldmittel einstellt, muss Mary Jayne andere Wege finden, um das
nötige Geld aufzutreiben. Das Team des ERC steht jedoch bald vor einer weiteren Herausforderung.
Das Hotel Splendide galt Varian, seinem Team sowie den auf ihre Weiterreise wartenden Flüchtigen bisher als
Unterschlupf. Nach einer Razzia müssen sie ihr Versteck jedoch verlassen. Eine neue Zuflucht finden sie am
Rande der Stadt in einer alten Villa, die dem Zionisten Thomas Lovegrove (Amit Rahav) gehört.
Hier prallen nun unterschiedliche Persönlichkeiten und Kulturen aufeinander.
