Founded by the late Edgar Froese, Tangerine Dream is perhaps the premier exponent of "electronic rock" music of the "Berlin School". From their "free-rock" beginnings in the nascent "krautrock" scene to the eventual synthesizer-based trio which signed to Virgin, this German group can take significant credit in introducing synthesizer- and sequencer-based electronic music to most of the Western rock world.
Cyclone is the eighth studio album by Tangerine Dream and the first in their canon to feature proper vocals and lyrics. Cyclone was a stepping stone for Tangerine Dream, into a whole new world of guitar-based psychedelic rock. It took Tangerine Dream several albums to perfect their ambient space fuelled electronic music, likewise Tangerine Dream certainly didn't get it right on their first proper attempt at psychedelic rock. Cyclone is nowhere near the level albums like Phaedra, Stratosfear and Rubycon set for Tangerine Dream. For anybody interested in the musical path of Tangerine Dream, Cyclone is a must. Those looking for a repeat of Phaedra's mesmerising ambient adventure will be sorely disappointed. Those looking for another Pink Floyd on the music wall should avoid this.
