Inhalt
After making mostly harmless entertainment films in the 1960s, Elvis Presley heralded his comeback to the stage with this TV special from 1968. "The King", dressed entirely in black leather, sings his greatest hits and shows himself to be at the peak of his success in this legendary NBC show.
In the 1950s, Elvis Presley led the rock 'n' roll revolution in popular music and culture. In the 60s he devoted himself primarily to his film career. In 1968 he celebrated his concert comeback after more than seven years of absence from the stage. In this recorded-for-television show, Elvis, dressed alone on stage in his iconic black leather suit, sings his most famous hits and appears in performances that are considered forerunners of today's Unplugged sessions.
Between two songs he jokes in a familiar tone with his fellow musicians from the old days and tells anecdotes. Sometimes gently seductive, sometimes wildly rocky, alone or close to his audience, he puts on his show. Musically staged sequences show him singing purely gospel, as a lonely saloon cowboy and together with gangsters in a Chicago club. All of this in an oriental-looking, glittering 70s ambience. Elvis Presley sings many of the songs that made him famous: "That's All Right," "Heartbreak Hotel," "One Night," "Blue Suede Shoes," "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" and “Love Me Tender.” He also interprets Jimmy Reed's song "Baby What You Want Me to Do" as well as lesser-known pieces such as "Tryin' to Get to You" and "When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again".
