Camel - Rain Dances (1977/2014) SACD

The band’s fifth release, Rain Dances is Camel at its best, offering the most consistent and representative package in their saga. The addition of Caravan-cofounder Richard Sinclair proves profitable, as do a few colorist touches by Brian Eno on “Elke.” Mel Collins’ woodwinds are among the highlights, especially on “Tell Me” and the title track. From beginning to end, this project flows gracefully.

McLaughlin had already achieved fame with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, on the brink of collapse due to disagreements within the band. New Age artist Fiona Joy brings many gifts and skills to her solo piano performance of the title song on Story of Ghosts. Your mind will fill in the pictures as you take the ride. With skill and confidence, she sets the mood with a minor melody, then adds upper harmony and begins altering the pace gently. In a bit over three minutes, she has you imagining downstairs and upstairs, unexplained sounds, sad ghosts making their nightly visits.
Then, “Story of Angels” provides a companion piece with just enough changes to the harmony and tempo to signify a different kind of spirit-being.
Elsewhere in the album, Fiona creates portraits of “The White Light,” a “Blue Dream,” and “The Solo Tango.”

Diana Krall – Love Scenes (1997/2004) SACD

Vocalist/pianist Diana Krall was a very hot property by the time this Impulse CD was released. Teamed in a trio with her regular guitarist Russell Malone and bassist Christian McBride, Krall here mostly emphasizes ballads having something to do with love. She is at her best on “I Don’t Know Enough About You,” “I Don’t Stand a Ghost of a Chance With You,” and “How Deep Is the Ocean.” However, Krall’s earlier Nat King Cole tribute had more variety in tempos and moods and is recommended first. A decent but not essential release.

Camel - The Snow Goose (2011) SACD

Camel's classic period started with The Snow Goose, an instrumental concept album based on a novella by Paul Gallico. Although there are no lyrics on the album two songs feature wordless vocals the music follows the emotional arc of the novella's story, which is about a lonely man named Rhayader who helps nurse a wounded snow goose back to health with the help of a young girl called Fritha he recently befriended. Once the goose is healed, it is set free, but Fritha no longer visits the man because the goose is gone. Later, Rhayader is killed in battle during the evacuation of Dunkirk. The goose returned during the battle, and it is then named La Princesse Perdue, symbolizing the hopes that can still survive even during the evils of war. With such a complex fable to tell, it is no surprise that Camel keep their improvisational tendencies reined in, deciding to concentrate on surging, intricate soundscapes that telegraph the emotion of the piece without a single word.

The album sold healthily at the time, peaking one spot short of the summit on the UK charts and going double platinum in the USA. The single Bad Love wasn’t as big a hit as you remember (it stalled at number 88 in the Billboard Hot 100) but did well on the AOR charts (number one on the “US Album Rock Tracks” chart).
