Andre Rieu - The 100 Greatest Moments [3xDVD9] (2008)
André Leon Marie Nicolas Rieu (French: André Léon Marie Nicolas Rieu; born October 1, 1949, Maastricht) is a Dutch conductor and violinist, called in the press the Waltz King after Johann Strauss son. Son of conductor André Rieu Sr. He studied in Liege, then in Maastricht, and graduated from the Brussels Conservatory in 1977; among Rieu's teachers were, in particular, André Gertler and Hermann Krebbers. He played second violin in the Limburg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of his father. Having founded the Maastricht Salon Orchestra, which consisted of literally several musicians, Rieu performed with them in Dutch nursing homes, performing Viennese waltzes. In 1987, under the leadership of Rieu, the Johann Strauss Orchestra arose, initially including 12 performers. In 1992, the orchestra recorded its first disc, Merry Christmas; in 1994, the recording of the Second Waltz from the Suite for pop orchestra by Dmitry Shostakovich made Rieu and his new band famous throughout the Netherlands, and the second album, Strauß & Co., did not leave the national Top100 for about a year. Subsequently, Rieu and his orchestra toured widely around the world, released up to seven albums (studio and concert) a year, and increased the composition of the orchestra to 50-55 musicians. By 2008, Rieu's albums had sold 27 million copies.
